Anxiety Case Study: From Panic and Fear to Confidence

Anxiety Case Study: From Panic and Fear to Confidence

This client story is based on real therapeutic work. Identifying details have been changed to protect confidentiality.

When “Sam” first came to work with me, anxiety was affecting many areas of his life. He was experiencing overthinking, panic attacks, strong physical sensations and morning palpitations. He worried about his health, the future, work, finances and what might happen next. Being alone had also become difficult, particularly when his family travelled or he was separated from the people who helped him feel safe.

He rated the impact of the problem on his life as 8 out of 10. His goals were to overcome the anxiety, feel confident again, regain emotional balance, become more comfortable when alone and return to socialising more freely.

The Pattern Beneath the Anxiety

One of the key patterns was the fear attached to his physical sensations. When he noticed palpitations or anxiety on waking, his attention immediately moved towards them. The sensation itself became something to monitor and fear.

Part of our work involved changing the meaning he was giving those sensations and helping him respond differently when they appeared. He also listened consistently to his personalised hypnosis recording between sessions and practised simple techniques to reinforce safety and calm.

What Started to Change

Over time, the morning anxiety became shorter and less intense. By his 60-day follow-up, he reported that sensations which had previously lasted until two or three in the afternoon were now disappearing shortly after waking.

He was also able to do things that had previously felt difficult. He attended an MRI alone and felt much calmer than usual. He became comfortable working from home, sleeping at home alone and managing independently without the same anxiety response.

His confidence was also returning. He described feeling more capable of handling both small and large challenges and less likely to assume that something would go wrong.

What His Life Looked Like 90 Days Later

By his 90-day follow-up, he reported no anxiety, increased confidence and better overall wellbeing.

He had spoken in front of approximately 40 to 50 people and delivered training at work without the nervousness he had previously experienced. He was planning to do more public speaking and had agreed to take part in a debate.

He was comfortable staying and sleeping at home alone. His palpitations and related physical symptoms were much less frequent and were no longer interfering with his daily life. He had also become more active socially, including attending dance classes with his wife, and was planning an overseas trip with a childhood friend.

For this client, the change was not simply that he felt less anxious.

His behaviour, confidence and daily life had changed.

What This Case Shows

This case is a good example of why I look beyond the anxiety symptom itself. The palpitations, panic and fear of being alone were important, but they were also part of a broader pattern involving fear, anticipation and confidence in his ability to cope.

My work combines Rapid Transformational Therapy®, clinical hypnotherapy, conversational hypnosis and Somatic Trauma-Informed Coaching techniques. I use these according to the individual client and what emerges through the process, rather than applying one standard anxiety script.

The goal is not only to reduce symptoms. It is to help the person respond differently in the situations that once felt difficult.
